One of my favorite fantasy stories is Robin Hood, largely influenced by the 1973 Disney animated film. Thus I chose to illustrate the original tale, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle for a senior book design project.
Book Creation:
I loved the idea of photography and illustration interacting together—again probably inspired by growing up with 90s cartoons). I superimposed some of my drawings over the photos—scroll-like headers and fly-away banners for captions. Then created illustrations which would fit around blocks of text (inspired by Medieval manuscripts), and created Gothic-style capital letters. For the characters, I put my own spin on them by making them into frogs! I wanted to show Sherwood Forest through photography, and thus took photographs at a beautiful park nearby my apartment.
